Julia Bethan is a freelance illustrator known for her characterful, expressive and textured illustrations… Not to mention her hilarious social media presence.
Favouring traditional techniques, her work is inspired by the images that spring to mind whilst reading. She goes big on the little things in life and loves the beauty in what others may often consider mundane.
After working as a paediatric nurse, Julia now focuses her attention on children’s illustrations.
Through her illustrative practice, she hopes to encourage play, inclusivity, & reassurance in feelings and the self.
Also makes a mean cup of coffee.

Favourable methods
Julia’s use of water colour lends itself immensely to her playful illustration style. Characters form their own individual personalities and environments exude atmosphere. Every brush stroke creates depth along with a gratifying feeling of originality.

Warm up routine
Before Julia begins working, she will set time aside to create something of her own. As a result, her hands feel “work ready” and she is able to illustrate freely.

Keepsakes
When nosing around Julias work space, you’ll be sure to find tiny sentimental pieces. Each piece holds a tale or two from her travels around the globe.

Known as JB
Julia is an absolute blast to work with. Her vivid imagination paired with an impeccable wit, will always result in those around her crying with laughter. With the innate ability to welcome anyone into her world, Julia is often at the crux of fresh ideas and exciting prospects.

On the pull
With any piece Julia finishes, she finds great satisfaction in removing the tape and revealing a crisp border line.

Pin ups
None of Julias “warm up” pieces go to waste. They all find a space amongst previous creations. This way, she can sit amongst a sea of references and enjoy the colourful vista.
In turn, the walls of her work space are akin to a giant children’s book, which is pretty awesome!
